That means that space is limited and as noticed has been filling up quickly. Make sure to hurry to the ASB and buy tickets before it is too late. Join a Club!
May 18, 2015
Hey Raiders! How can you make your time in high school worth wild? Next year you should consider joining extracurricular activities of course! You don't need to join multiple clubs only to make your resumes look better, although you can, but participate in a sport or club that you are passionate about. southwest has a variety of different clubs such as, chess, M.E.C.H.A, Japanese/Anime, Pan Asian, ART, SAA and many many more that offer you a lot of knowledge and experience in just any field of stud or hobby you're interested in. Also, you can promote awareness about the topic or field of study that other students are not aware of, feel closeness and learn how to deal with people, and train to be a more well-rounded and stronger student throughout high school. If there's something you're interested in, regardless if you never done it before, seize the moment to find yourself, grab that opportunity and don't wait later on. If soccer, hockey, football, volleyball, etc. makes you happy interact with the coaches and join the team right now.

Teacher's Appreciation Week
May 13, 2015
Raiders make a teachers day and let them know how appreciated you are for having them. A little letter could make their day you never know what could happen. A simple gesture could make them feel that they're doing their job well and that they have a reason to come to work everyday .

Cheer
May 11, 2015
Cheerleaders! Today is the day you have been waiting for. You will be knowing who had made the cheer team for either varsity or JV. You have worked hard to make it on the team Let's hope that it will turn out how you wanted it to be. If you put your time and dedication to it, then be sure and confident that you have made it on the team. Also, make sure to keep that dedication because you will be needing it all year long. Don't ever give and make it worth it.

Ready Seniors?
April 22, 2015
Seniors! The last day is getting closer really quick and there's still a lot of things going on. Prom is just right around the corner as well as grad-night! If you plan on attending either of those events, make sure to check if you owe anything to the ASB or library. Make sure that you are not on the non-privilege list and that you stay off it. Pay as soon as possible because tickets are running out for grad-night and soon it will be too late! The buses are filling up so do not wait last minute. Do everything with time, so there is less stress and so you could be assured a ticket for either events. Make your last high school memories last!

Countdown Begins!
April 20, 2015
30 more days and the 2015 class is done with high school . These 4 years went by so quickly . I spent 3 years here at SOH and it has been the best time of my life. I lost friends , gained , learned to be more involved and better yet gained success being here. My sophomore year was a hard start . I was even thinking about college or where I'm headed in 2 years. I was confused... I had to work my butt off just to get where I am now. I never had a vacation to myself because I was always attending school just to make up the lost time . My ninos had given up on me because they believe I didn't want to be successful but they were wrong it just took the right person for me to see it ... My parents. I didn't want to end up like them and for my future to be the same as them . I wanted a different path. Now that senior year is almost over I know where I'm going and what I want in the future. I got accepted into SDSU and I got a free ride . I couldn't be any happier. All those late nights staying up was worth it .every vacation that I didn't get made it worth it. I got my stuff together maybe a little late then others but it doesn't make me less successful. I'm happy and thankful where I am right now .

Make Someone's Day
April 16, 2015
"Give someone a compliment. tell the girl sitting in front of you that you like her hair color. Tell that boy sitting in the corner that you like his shoes. Open the doors for an elderly, bandage up a cute on a kid's knee and give them a sticker. Everyday, make a strangers day. You never know what could happen. For one, you could save a life."
A simple act of kindness could make a difference in someones life. They will start to believe that there are people who care. Don't hesitate in doing something generous, it never something bad so don't ever hesitate!

Being on a diet is so hard for many people but with dedication and commitment anybody could do it. Many people struggle because there not comfortable with there image there insecure and don't feel fit. You could be fit by signing up to the gym and going everyday at least 2-3 hours if you don't have the time or money for a gym you could do workouts at home or download an app that tell you what work out to do, you can also go for a run around the blocks or even to a community park there's no excuse about no being able to go the gym there's many things you could do without wasting money. You could have a heathy meal plan and watch what your eating leave all the fast food and junk food aside and buy more healthy stuff like fruit or veggies so therefore theres no excuse about no being able to be fit just have dedication and commitment to do it and you'll see results.

Attention Sophomores!
March 12, 2015
Sophomores! Have you been getting ready and studying? We hope you have because your CAHSEE is already next week! Make sure to take this exam very seriously. This test will determine whether you graduate from high school or not. Even though you have until senior year to re take it if you fail, try your best to pass it on the first try. It is proven that students tend to do worse than their first try because it is harder for them and they're under more pressure. Don't be nervous about this exam and don't let it distract you. The Raider family believes that you sophomores will be successful with this exam! Make sure to aim for that 380 or higher!

Prom!
March 04, 2015
Prom is right around the corner for seniors its on may and tickets are starting to be on sale for single its 60 and for a couple it is 115 and they are going to keep bringing them up when it keeps getting closer and closer. There is no need to put the prices up but that's your own choice. For girls, you need to be asked out to prom or just go with friends, they are the ones who have to shop till they find the right dress the right heels and have to make appointments for hair and makeup. For the guys, you get a haircut, look for a tux, shoes and that's basically it. Take into consideration that girls are the ones who have a more difficult time in finding that perfect dress no other girl has. So seniors make sure to get your prom tickets ask out your date and buy everything with time. Do not wait until the very end!

Many of us now in the 21st century do not go out and play as before when we were kids. Marbles, tag, freeze tag, cops and robbers, hide & seek are basically out of our lives since we grew out of that. But now that we are older 14 -18 years, we should do something similar that requires us to be outdoors and not just being couch potatoes at home. Taking walks at the beach, hanging out with your friends, playing a sport at the park , taking your dog out to walk or simply taking walks with your friends. We have had enough of us just sitting at home playing video games and moving our thumbs. After homework is completed it is good to go out and make good out of it not bad. Go Raiders get up from that bed or couch and do something productive with friends or family and especially for yourself.

Baseball
March 03, 2015
After coming back from a miraculous season ending in CIF semi-finals. The baseball team is back and and they are hungrier than ever. After having a taste of sweat victory the team has high hopes of taking it all the way to home this year. The team has been at it since early fall this year, practice has been the most important part of their day for months, its crazy how much they've been working. Some may believe that our school's baseball players aren't the best performers but it is adequate to say that these guys are true athletes; the hours that has been put it, all the hustling, precision, and focus reflects what true athletes are and they will show it.

How can any teacher be simultaneously amiable, thoroughly organized, unique, rare, nice, disciplined, fit, fun and just plain incredible? Oh yeah, Mrs. Bush is! You may have Mrs. Bush as a teacher, she'll be one of the greatest people you'll ever meet in high school. She genuinely motivates regular P.E students and dancers to do physically well and she doesn't consider it a waste of her time. What's so magnificent about her is that shes a dance instructor and she has a passion to teach her level of skill into a group of kids through various types of dancing!

February 20, 2015
In southwest high school there's a 6 weeks progress report coming out. It feels so real for the seniors that graduation day is coming closer and closer. This means that we have to give it are all and best to pass and do great in all our classes. There is no time to mess up because with one little mistake were done and we would not graduate. You could do all your work completed on time and come to tutoring after school there many reasons that help you improve your grade so there's no excuses why you shouldn't pass a class. So better make good choices seniors graduation is right around the corner.

Freshman Grades?
February 19,2015
Have you ever wondered how your freshman year grades affect you in you future? They have a big impact during your senior year. For example, myself, I didn't really pay attention and didn't do my work therefore I failed. When I failed I really didn't care I said, "eh I'll do it late or make it up next year". When they offered summer school I never went because I wanted to enjoy my vacations. It has affected me a lot. It's my last year and I have zero period and have to wake up at 5 to be at school at 6:30 am and I'm doing a credit in apex. For those who are freshman and think that it's okay to fail and not do work, there is consequences you would not like to face. They should all there work and have the best grades and it will benefit them in the future like going to university instead of community college and having better benefits then those who have lower grades therefore look at as an example and don't fail and try your hardest during high school because it will be your future.

The 5 W's Of Life

WHO you are is what makes you special. Do not change for anyone.
WHAT lies ahead will always be a mystery. Do not be afraid to explore.
WHEN life pushes you over, you push back harder.
WHERE there are choices to make, make the ones you wont regret.
WHY things happen will never be certain. Take it in stride and move forward.

Celebrities
February 18, 2015
Do you ever wonder what celebrities do in their free time?
Imagine what they could be doing. They can wake up and go off to Paris if they wanted to. It would be nice to be able to travel and they have that opportunity. Celebrities can be welcome where ever they desire to go if they're well known in that city. While most people are saving up for a long time to go where they really want to go, a celebrity go just do it right at the moment. Most of us would like the fame but the privacy life is pretty hard. Being a celebrity has its pros and its cons. Imagine having to deal with paparazzi everywhere you go. We should just be thankful for the life we have no matter what the circumstances are.

Tardies
February 12, 2015
Lots of people at SOH are tardy every day. Mostly to 1st period. Most teacher don't care about the tardies & mark their students tardy. But the teachers who do care actually send their student to ASIP , and make their student get 2 hour detention after school. Lots of people are tardy every period. And at SOH the tardies add up , and you can get a detention for only 5 tardies. Also, if you don't attend to the attention that they assign you, you have to go to Saturday school. In my opinion , i don't like having to go to ASIP , or being marked tardy. As long as you come to class at least 5-10 mins after the bell rings you should be marked absent. But for the people who come 30-40 mins late to class , should be marked tardy or absent. That is my opinion on being late/tardy.

Sadies!!
February 11,2015
Girls it's our turn to make "the move". Don't know what i'm talking about? On March 20th, the Junior class is hosting a masquerade themed Sadies Hawkins dance. Sadies Hawkins is a dance in which the girl asks a guy to the dance instead of the guy doing it. This will be the first time this dance will be hosted, hope to see you there!

Does what you wear define who you are?
February 11,2015
Most people in high school judge on what type of clothes you wear or what brand is on your shoes or shirt but is that really the case?
When you're in high school it's about knowing what the new trend is. In reality it's not. It's what you know. How you proceed yourself to your peers in school. In five years were not going to look back at what clothes you bought or where you bought it from were going to look back on what you did in high school and how you became successful. So no , who cares what you wear. Your main priority to worry about is school and what you wear and how you look like shouldn't matter. Like mentioned before what you wear won't be important when you are successful. If what you wear whether it is clothes, make-up for girls etc. makes you comfortable continue to do it and do not worry about what other people think or tell you. You do not have to be like everyone else to fit in. Be a leader not a follower. Materialistic things can be taken away but your education will stay with you forever.

School Food
February 10, 2015
Is school food healthy for you? That is a question many of us ask when grabbing food. First Lady Michelle Obama has introduced to schools policies in which certain foods can be given and eaten at school. Schools have removed foods that once were kind of healthy but now its food that an individual can right away tell it is not healthy. The Pizza is dry and taste nasty, chicken wings, fries, pasta everything in the cafeteria is nasty and doesn't taste well. The only things i can think of that are healthy and taste at least somewhat better than the rest is the turkey sandwich and the salads. The food even looks like it was cooked weeks ago and they just pre-heat it. There should be something done in school to change the menu and give food that is really edible. Students and Teachers & Parents should get together to change the food and really think about the food we eat & it is not worth it. Students that have to pay to eat wont pay the $2.00 with something cents that school sells the food for because it doesn't taste good at all. We should all make a change in the menu for something that's truly worth eating!

"The Interview"
February 10, 2015
A 2014 american action comedy film starring James Franco as Dave Skylark and his producer Seth Rogen as Aaron Rapoport in which they surprisingly land an interview with one of their biggest fan, Kim Jong-Un the North Korean dictator. This movie carries on by the CIA recruiting Dave Skylark and Aaron Rapoport to make their "interview' a mission, to assassinate the North Korean leader. The productions of this film was troublesome, due to the fact that it extremely offends Kim Jong-Un and his country. Tensions and arguments increased as the production of this film came to an end. It's true that Sony's system was hacked into in order to stop the release of it. As a result of the issues that were faced, the film could not be released in theaters. However, it was released as different forms of media such as in DVD's, on YouTube, and on Netflix

Birthdays
February 5, 2015
Birthdays, one of the happiest moment of a young child’s life. The moment they've been waiting for all year to occur. But let’s get deeper into the ideas of birthdays. As I kept on thinking I thought to myself, these kids only want presents or money. As they get older I realized that these types of things change, kids are not what they used to be. Some become greedy or selfish that they only expect to be given things without really deserving what they get. They become stuck in the idea that they only want to be given things and that it doesn't matter if someone doesn't get anything, they’re just happy if they get some present. Teenagers have the same perspective but it changes a little bit. The change is that they just want to hang around with friends having a good time and if they get a present it’s basically a bonus. Adults have that mentality of birthdays that everyone should have, they have that feeling of satisfaction when they are blowing off the candles alongside their friends and family because as they get older they realize that life is short and they should cherish every moment, no matter how little or how big.

SOH Clásico
February 5, 2015
It was the only thing many of our Raiders and men’s varsity soccer players could talk or think about practically all week. Just the thought of it made there heart’s race just as fast as they did for the ball that day, but not as fast. As many, and I myself, had longed for the day to end that day just so that we could all watch in awe and pride of our school; the men’s varsity was preparing for an ultimate showdown against one of their rivals. Finally, the day had ended and Raiders had rushed to the field to stand by the soccer team. Win or lose, we stood, not as a crowd, but as a family. Standing in the crowd, you could hear the hisses of pain as we felt with our team, the pain they felt. We sweat the sweat they sweated; feeling it trickle from the forehead down, quick and focused just as they did on that field. The adrenaline pumping through their bodies keeping them agile, concentrated, and coordinated; was the same adrenaline that pumped through ours. Finally, ending the game with a whopping score of 3-1 the crowd began to cheer in victory for the team’s success. As we began to chant “S-O-H, S-O-H, S-O-H” we came into a harmony and perfect momentum, as if it was not individuals chanting in a group, but instead we chanted as one. The crowd and team had ended the game as they did starting it, together as one, a family. Montgomery had stepped into “La Casa de Los Campeones” and in that house lies a family that no matter how hard we take a loss, or how well we win, we stand together.

If you had to pick...
October 10, 2014 If you could choose in between; A) The Society- A totalitarian government where the Officials determine everything: when you are born, where you work, who you marry, and when you die; all this information gathered from results obtained from all of one's surroundings. All the time remembering that the Society keeps all its citizens safe and with the opportunity at a chance of a long and happy life. or... B) Panem- The Capitol and The Districts. The Hunger Games, held every year as a reminder that the Districts need the Capitol to survive. Everyone is required to enter their name in between the ages of 12 and 18, and every year two unfortunate are chosen from every District to fight and try to win the Games. Which would YOU choose? Hello Again!
October 7, 2014 *Yawns and stretches* Goooood Morning Raiders! Yes, morning, not noon; we are back to school and therefore must begin to practice waking up early again and arriving to school on time. So here I leave a few quotes to cheer up your day the good ol' Lemony Snicket way! "If writers wrote as carelessly as some people talk, then adhasdh asdglaseuyt[bn[ pasdlgkhasdfasdf." "There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you, and there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself." "Wishing, like sipping a glass of punch, or pulling aside a bear skin rug in order to access a hidden trap door in the floor, is merely a quiet way to spend one's time before the candles are extinguished on one's birthday cake." -Lemony Snicket Written by: Staff Minion |

The Giver
September 8, 2014
We are presented with The Giver, based on the best seller that bears the same name. now, those who actually read the book, after seeing the trailer, have come to the consensus that the movie is no more than the same basic structure of the book while the rest is merely the way to make it a real movie. This book was actually published some time ago and readers have wondered exactly how they planned to run this wonderful story into a movie. Probably after Hunger Games and Divergent became such great hits, the Dystopian Societies stories really started to spring up out of nowhere. In the Giver, we are once again given a glimpse at a probable future for human society. In this particular society everything at first glance seems perfect and simple. The Elders--the society's governors--have long ago decided to erase certain characteristics, and have everyone be equal. There are also the ceremonies, and depending on your age you are celebrated for something different, like our main character Jonas who is to turn twelve and so will get his job, one he will take on for the rest of his life. But the difference between Jonas and his other fellow twelves, is that Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memories, and with this great job in his hands he will have to exercise great power and will to do what is right for everyone.

Respect Everyone Around You, Respect Yourself
September 4, 2014
Do you know what respect is? Well in case you don’t here is the definition; Respect-the ability to see and celebrate the value in ourselves and others. Respecting others is one of the most important things you could do because as our older generations say “treat others as you want to be treated”. There are six core strengths, attachment, self-regulation, affiliation, awareness, tolerance and of course respect, that should be used everyday.Even though there are many who apply this moral value there others that don’t even know what it means. Developing the capacity for respect is a lifelong challenge, we as young students are the future to our world and if we want a better place to live in, then we need to do something. Not respecting others does not take you anywhere instead it leads to conflict, our past is full of unfortunate events like racism that led to catastrophes just because someone couldn't respect others culture. But before you start respecting others you have to respect yourself. The development of self-respect, and self-esteem, is guided by how we see ourselves. The people in our lives act as a mirror in this process. There can’t be respect for others when there is no self-respect because when we identify and appreciate your strengths and accept your vulnerabilities it becomes easier to respect others.I invite you to respect yourself so you can start to enjoy the world around you. Not everyone is going to be like you or have the same ideas because that will just be boring. Be open minded and accepts different people’s point of view. When you open yourself to different people and ideas, you are going to start to appreciate people in a different way because you accept who they really are. Act the Raider Way!

Mobile Game Addiction
September 2, 2014
Mobile games are a “gateway drug”, programmers are taking advantage of psychological corks that have an impact on how you act. Dopamine is a little molecule that acts like your bodies happy hormone that activates when you feel accomplished. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that creates a tiny electric charge every time you get excited. Dopamine gets caught by the receptors after passing the cinaps. The first few times you perform an addictive action your body gets tons of dopamine, but after a while the receptors start to retract and less and less dopamine make the leap of faith threw the cinaps. This is called Desensitization To get the same level of dopamine, you need to intake more and more each time, also lowering even more the number of your receptors. Mobile games have some ways to control your intake of dopamine preventing you from getting desensitized. They get you to start of great with the introductory levels, getting achievements, new items and beating it with ease, getting you into the game early on. After the levels get harder the burst become more sporadic and not as often, but instead of feeling discouraged, you get even more dopamine, after feeling that you had earned the victory, and got better items, making you feel more satisfied. Some games also have programed a waiting session after playing too much or losing some lives. This leaves you wanting more and makes returning to play after hours more rewarding. This is the “hedonic treadmill” says that as a persons situation changes, so does its expectations for happiness. Persay, people whom have been paralyzed or won the lottery report the same level of happiness because they returned to their happiness equilibrium, their happiness adjusts to their new level. But with mobile games having brakes, you never get adjusted to that new level of happiness. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is a quote to represent this concept. Games are even made easier to get addictive by being free to play and easily accessible from your pocket.

#SelfieObsession
August 28, 2014
As technology keeps improving we keep getting more social media trends, and when electronic devices with cameras on the front were invented selfies were introduced. More than 31 million Instagram pictures have been hash tagged #selfie and a study from Pew Research Center shows that 91 percent of teens have posted a picture of them online. Taking a sefie is easy, just flip your phone or iPod at the right angle, making your eyes look bigger and your cheekbones more outlined. Various celebrities are also avid selfie posters, making selfies a bigger trend.
Why is it so popular? It allows you to control your image online, you choose how you look, at what angle you’re going to take it, the lightning and cover your “imperfections”. People like to have the power to choose how they look, and the most common selfie is where you look all cute to get positive comments, it’s like a mini boost of confidence.
It’s cool to show off your outfit, what someone gave you or where you’re at, but it can get out of hand and then you will have negative consequences. Psychologist Jill Weber states that your self-esteem is at risk to get tied up to the comments and likes you get on your selfie, and they are not on who you are but on what you look like. On the other hand Dr.Weeber explains “It’s a healthy way for teenagers to develop their identity”. But people shouldn’t get caught up in selfies, it’s like you’re posting a picture to get approval on your looks by other people. It can get to the point that the more you likes the better you feel, but if you get none at all your confidence is gone. Selfie culture is practiced mostly by girls, it’s them who are often suffering the negative effects of selfies.
You are the one who controls your love for selfies, if you just take them for fun you’re good, but if you do it for the comments and likes you are in trouble. Dr. Rutledge recommends cutting selfies for your own good or start taking them just for fun. Everything has a limit, don’t be an over obsessive selfie poster.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
August 22, 2014 "The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge" by now, many a person have come across these words and realized their meaning, especially because, yesterday Ms. Waters was publicly challenged to this by some fellow Raiders on KSOH. But, to those few who still do not understand what this means: the Ice Bucket Challenge is--simply put--dumping a bucket of iced water over one's head or donate to the ALS charity organization. So think about this Raiders, donate to charity and for fun dump some cold water over yourself (but try doing it at the beach where no water will be wasted!) Written by: Staff Minion |

When I Say "We Are" You Say "RAIDERS!"
August 8, 2014 Raiders, today is our first ever PEP ASSEMBLY of the year!!! Everyone must be very excited but a few matters must be address first. As you all know many of the staff are encouraging us to follow the "Raider Way" and what this means is to stop the tradition of booing at other classes. This is not following "The Raider Way," all this does is cause rivalry between the students and ensure that this "tradition" continues through the years. So let's change that this years Raiders. Instead of booing at each other how about just clap for our fellow students? Take this into consideration Raiders, and hope you have a wonderful day today. Written by: Staff Minion |

There's No Other Way To Say This; We're All In This Together!!!
August 7, 2014 Raiders, a matter of truly importance has surfaced and I believe it is well we address it here in our school's newspaper. Our school is proud to be a school that supports a wide diversity of students. For a long time it was pretty school wide accepted that no matter where we come from or who we are, we are more than welcome here at school. Because SOH wants to be a safe environment for everyone no matter their race and/or nationality, let's all be tolerant, let's all be a BIG, BIG, Great family and LOVE each other no matter our differences. This also applies to the new freshmen being welcomed to our school. Clap Once* Clap Twice* RAIDERS!!!
July 24, 2014
Goooooooooooooooood Morning Raiders!
Welcome back! And for the new students (and staff) Welcome! Hope everyone had a wonderful summer (or at least fairly enjoyable). But now it is time to return to school mode. Remember Raiders: do your work, listen to your teachers, and most importantly do the best you can in all your classes. Seniors, because it is your last year of high school (College Applications!); Juniors, colleges look at this year quite a lot; Sophomores, most of you will begin taking AP classes this year; and, finally, Freshmen, because you are entering high school, and what's more, a wonderful school called Southwest High. So make sure you enjoy this year Raiders (Seniors especially) and have fun!

So...here we are...
June 6, 2014
*sigh* The last day of school, is it really? Wow...time sure does fly...Let's give ourselves a grand round of applause! To those Freshmen who survived their first year of highschool! To those Sophomores who conquered APWH this year! And, finally, to those Juniors who are about to enter into their last year of highschool...a big round of applause for all! Everyone has done wonderfully this year. Even the staff. So let us not remember this day as the last day of school, but as the first day of our lives. For us to go from being Tributes, to becoming Shadowhunters, to being Divergent, and finally, to become Demigods.
Have a wonderful day everyone, and we hope to see you all again next year.

Our time is up- Meet your new Raiders Digest Newspaper Editors!
May 29, 2014
It's here, it's finally here-the last day for Seniors. With that, this is also my very last article EVER (at least for high school). I realize that for many this is going to be a very emotional day. And for some this is probably the greatest relief. Whether you are among the masses of these two groups or not, we cannot escape the reality. We're graduating and today is the last day, so enjoy the day as much as possible. Now, I don't plan to sound too sentimental but I would like to thank Karla Martinez-Castro. All this year she has stuck with me in doing the newspaper. In my effort to revamp our school's newspaper, Karla was my right hand-man..or woman. I honestly could not have completed this task of Newspaper Editor without her. Karla, you have contributed so much this year to the newspaper as well as outside this class. I appreciate all your time and effort and wish you the best in all you do. You are a FABULOUS co-editor and I know you will do great in life. So yes, I do not want to consider myself JUST the editor because Karla did the same everyday.
Now without much further adieu, I present the 2014-2015 Raiders' Digest Newspaper Editor: Veronica Arredondo. Working alongside her will be the 2014-2015 Raiders Digest Newspaper Co-Editor: Melanie Garcia. I know both of you will do just as good of a job on next year's newspaper or even BETTER. I wish both of you the best of luck with the newspaper and the best senior year! You both will be successful and I am glad to have passed everything on to you girls. I would not have it any other way.
As much as I complained about high school, it was not all that bad. I'm just glad the stress is over! Thank you to all the people who made high school memorable. I know I won't forget any of it. Thank for letting me serve you, Southwest High School.
Best of luck, everyone.
I bid you adieu.

Days of Future Past
May 28, 2014
Day of the future past is here in the present now!!! The most exciting movie of the year is here. After 8 years without any good X-men movies (because we don’t think that x-men origins nor wolverine in japan or X-men the last stand deserve to be even considered part of the series but first class does . Professor Xavier and Magneto join together to help Wolverine go to the past and prevent a post-apocalyptic future era for the mutants. In this story, Wolverine goes to the past and gathers mutants and information in order to prevent that predicted future from happening. If you are going to watch it, you might want to refresh your X-men memories and watch the days of the future past tv show….or not. But something is certain; you will love this movie if you are a science fiction mutant with genetic variation fan.

Keeping It Cool
May 22, 2014
Summer has begun and vacations are right around the corner, so the question is: how do we stay cool?
Now some of you might think "stay cool? I'm already hella cool." Yeah, but unless you have magical powers that control the weather, that's not gonna prevent you from melting this summer.
So here's some things you can do to endure the sun's hotness:
1. stick with a princess looking for her misunderstood sister that caused an eternal winter
2. approach a Dementor (at your own risk)
3. lie on the cold hard ground
(after a while your butt will warm it up and you'll have to find a new spot)

Haha okay so maybe they're not the best pieces of advice, but c'mon, if we've survived this far, I know we can handle the heat B)
After all, there's always yummy ice-cream to be eaten, pools to be visited, air-conditioned movies to be watched with friends, and I'm sure we can all rely on our greatest fans.
So put on those shorts and those flip flops and do all the things Olaf wanted to do in summer!

May 22, 2014 Attention all seniors! Are you ready to enjoy the rest of the day at the amusement parks? If you are then here are some helpful tips to have fun at Disneyland: -wear casual or comfortable clothes -be light weight "if not you"ll be the dead weight"; don't bring a pack full of stuff in your bag that your going to walk around with -bring an extra pair of shorts, pants or shirts since you might come out soaked - bring extra money for the food courts and gift shops if you want to bring home souvenirs for family members or yourself -do the alternative and learn smoke signs; save your cell phone battery for emergency calls - have a conversation with the person next to you to kill time -no school colors due to school rivalry -go on all the rides :D -keep your belongings in a safe place where you know you won't lose them and can find them anytime -stay with a group of people and get to know them or friends since the more the merrier! - have a blast throughout the day c: Don't forget to take pictures as a memento too! P.S. Comment to us below on how your day went at Disneyland and the journey you had - whether with friends, acquaintances, or yourself! the amazing spider-man 2
May 20, 2014
Once again Andrew Garfield taps into his spidey senses and returns to the big screen in, The Amazing Spiderman 2. In this sequel, we see Peter Parker struggle between his social life and hero life. This time, he saves New York from the maddened Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the vengeful Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan). However, that's not all that needed saving.
Throughout the film, Peter and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), experience an on and off relationship. But the moment they're able to patch things up, let's just say things take a bitter turn for the worst. In the end, the movie finishes off on a bittersweet note with Peter continuing his heroic double life while coping with his grief.
In review, the movie was pretty decent for the general audience. But for those true fanatics of the Spiderman franchise, it wasn't exactly all it was cracked up to be. "While not a terrible movie, it was pretty incompetent in it's narrative style." -Sal Gutierrez, Comic Book Enthusiast. And even though the performances of Andrew and Emma were fantastic and could captivate the audience, the acting in the film as a whole was subpar due to the lack of proper characterization in Harry Osborne and a few others. Overall, from a scale of 1-10, 1 being bad and 10 the best, the movie rates on average a 6.5. So, if you haven't seen the movie, it would most likely be worth your buck. Besides, going to an air conditioned movie theater in this weather provides another incentive to go out and watch a few flicks. Just remember, if you have a smartphone, download the app Shazam and use it at the ending credits of The Amazing Spider-man 2 in order to see the "secret-ending".

Mother's Day
May 09, 2014 Mother's Day is probably one of the most important and meaningful day of the year! Everybody, no matter the situation should always appreciate their mother for what they have given them throughout their life. Nobody can be more caring and trusting than your mother, she will always be there in your time of need and will always love everyday of the year. You already know how special your mother is, so please just take the extra special days of Mother's Day to show some love. Whether it's a small gift or no gift at all, taking the time out of your day to tell how special she is can go a long way. In the U.S, Mother's day is this Sunday May 11, 2014. In Mexico, Mother's Day is this Saturday May 10, 2014. Written By: James Alvarez |
And this is supposed to be hello?
May 5, 2014
If you have never noticed the way your friends respond to a simple hello, then just get closer and check out their freaky response. By excluding the sounds of those around you, you can see that the average person will either respond with hi or hello, and then the weird response will never be expected. It may seem hard to notice such things due to the fact that it is a small detail and as human nature we tempt to ignore those. Now these are the ways you may say hello:
-Hand shake hello
-Fist bump
-Uncomfortable hug
-The I dont know what to do shake hug
-The loud Hello
-No hello
-Behind hugs or pokes
-That's not my name: Hello
-The who are you?

Spring Sports Assembly Recap: One to Remember
May 1, 2014 This past Spring sports assembly was definitely one you wouldn't have wanted to miss. But if you did, here's how it went down: As always the band pumped up the mood with walk in music keeping Raiders anticipating with excitement. However, as soon as everyone had piled in and found a seat, a moment of silence was taken. It was to recognize and honor the passing of Jose Montano- an important member of the Southbay community. He time and time again showed selflessness and reminded us to be grateful for what we had and for everyone around us. Afterwards, the spirit was brought back with the walking of this years Spring sports which ranged from lacrosse and water polo all the way to academic league. Followed after, were performances by the intense and tough karate club. the enthusiastic, vibrant cheering team, the grateful and vivacious winter guard and the hip and energetic rap duo of Eric and Bryan Montero. So whether you were in the stands with a team or performing- All in all, the assembly was a huge success and definitely one to remember. Written By: Lianni Jo Cruz |
How to get a DRIVER'S LICENSE
May 1, 2014 If you are looking to get a license then there are a few steps you need to do. Anyone under 18 years old needs to take classes in an actual classroom or on an online course. After meeting the requirements to pass, you are issued a certificate of completion. This is what you take to the DMV to be able to take the written test for a driving permit. You can just walk in and take the test without an appointment. With permit in hand, you can drive so long as a licensed adult is with you. You are required to have 6 hours of driving with an instructor and 50 hours of driving with your parents to take the actual driving test. The driving instructor will give you another certificate after the 6 hours and you can take the test after 6 months of having a permit. It is a good idea to schedule an appointment in advanced when taking a driving test since many people are constantly taking the test. Once you pass and I hope you do, you get a temporary license until the actual one comes in the mail. Congratulations, you have just become a licensed driver. Written By: Patrick Bautista |

Breaking Down the Barriers
April 30, 2014
As you may already know, Breaking Down the Barriers took place yesterday.
Led by Mr. Rodriguez and the amazing Safe School Ambassadors, this day was designed to build awareness of the different forms of mistreatment that occur at our school each day - let it be direct like pushing someone around or calling them names, or indirect like excluding them.
The participants consisted of students recommended by teachers, counselors or fellow students, for possessing leadership skills that could be used to make a positive change on campus, for there is always room for improvement.
Early in the morning, the participants were enthusiastically received by the leaders, who cheered them as they entered. After a brief introduction of what the day would be about, it was time to break the ice with fun activities. Those students that were not convinced and wished to return to class did so. However, the great majority remained to participate in the different group discussions and purposeful activities. Trust slowly began to build between the different groups, the discussions becoming more insightful and analytical.
Perhaps the most emotive and meaningful activities, however, were “If You Really Knew Me” and “Crossing the Line.” During the “If You Really Knew Me”, participant and leaders alike had the opportunity to get experiences off their chest, some in tears, knowing they had a group of people who were not only willing to listen without judgment, but respected and supported them. A counselor was present at all times in case someone needed to talk to them. “Crossing the Line” succeeded in uniting them all, proving that we all share similar painful experiences, that we are not alone.
Positivity flowed more than ever at the end, when all those involved wrote and received stickers with positive and happy comments. Some students also shared out their experiences and thanked their group and Mr. Rodriguez for all their support.
You may not have participated in Breaking Down the Barriers, but that doesn't mean you can’t make a positive impact and even save a life in the process. You can. Never doubt that.
Remember: change begins with you.

Prom Highlights
April 29, 2014 It was only 3 days ago when Prom happened. It was the moment we all looked forward to when we were kids. Influences such as High School Musical is what made our generation picture what that moment would be like. "Forever for Tonight" fit the persona of what we had expected since our younger years. Prom was such a fun experience and was worth going to. Whether you went with a date or with friends, you were sure to have fun. Last day of Spirit Week and a possible get out of Class Pass?!
April 25, 2014 Sport! Yeah you heard right, sports, that is the final theme of today's spirit week. Wear a sport jersey to support your favorite sport, or wear school colors to show your support for the after school extracurricular activities. Today, there will be an assembly over by the gym in honor of the Spring Sports. Raiders, remember that this is the last sports related assembly of 2013-2014. Don't feel left behind and ask your teachers to see if they plan to go to the assembly. We were informed by an ASB member that the assembly will take place at the end of 5th and the beginning of 6th, so be patient as the day may seem long. Written by: Karla M. |

Everybody loves Coffee on Fridays!
April 24, 2014 Caffeine- is it a necessity, part of a daily routine, or is it a growing trend? More and more people are drinking tea, coffee, or energy drinks. People, especially teenagers, are more likely to run out of the door in the morning with a big cup of Starbucks coffee or tea. It used to be our parents that were groggy, sleepy, and grumpy in the mornings. They were the ones with huge eye bags and raspy voices, but now it’s us teenagers. What happened? We used to be one of the most lively age groups out there NATURALLY! No we are the ones with bad mornings, spilling our drinks, dropping our food, or forgetting something important at home. With less and less sleep every day, we are beginning to depend on caffeine as our main fuel in the mornings rather than sitting down and eating a healthy breakfast. Use of caffeine is connected to lack of sleep. During the day, we are so active, or minds are bouncing all over the place. Night time would normally be time to lie down and relax, but let’s be honest, most teenagers fall asleep using their phones, dropping it on their face or falling asleep with it next to them. Constant brain stimulation prevents us from relaxing and getting a good night’s sleep, therefore we are always sleepy in the mornings which leads us to grab a big cup of coffee in the morning to wake us up. Other than coffee becoming a necessity, it is also becoming a trend. Starbucks is a place where teenagers go to hangout and study, or use the wifi. But who goes to Starbucks just to sit? Almost no one. Aside from coffee and tea, other foods and drinks containing caffeine are becoming part of our daily diets. Taken in moderation is not fatal or anything, but it’s addictive, so when we start to drink too much too often, that’s when things get bad. Excess caffeine can cause headaches, mood swings, dizziness, and anxiety. It can also cause dehydration, and loss of calcium and potassium. Worst of all, it can cause nervous disorders which will eventually lead to heart problems. Next time you have trouble getting up in the morning, reconsider buying that extra tall, caffeine packed Cappuccino your body was craving and jump into the shower to wake yourself up. Even turn up the cold water if you need to, but not too much or you’ll get sick. Written by: Gabby Devera |
Come one, come all to purchase the yearbook!
April 23,2014
We are proud and excited to announce that the yearbook is finished and it's all thanks to the time and efficiency of our editors, co-editors, and members. Their contribution to the work was essential towards the creation of the yearbook. The yearbook isn't just filled with pictures and writing; it is a book filled with memories from the beginning to the end of the school year. When you open this yearbook and see it by firsthand, what come across your mind? Once you throughly look into the yearbook and reach the last page, know that your Raider memories are kept safely forever in this book. Once a raider always a Raider, but you are the person that makes a difference.

Raising the Volume to your Hearing Aid like; Turn Down for What!
April 23, 2014 Going back in time to the Retro Days, to the Hipster Days, and to the Dinosaur Age. Just a joke guys, but in all seriousness, today is Old People Day, and it is a great opportunity to be a look a like to your elderly relatives. Use this time to acknowledge that these people also considered their clothing as "hip" back in the throw back days so respect your Grandparents and use their style with respect to the year they were worn in. SOH LACROSSE HIGHLIGHTS
April 22, 2014 The boy's lacrosse team wasted no time in making a statement. The Raiders played Montgomery in an intense battle. The crowd was pumped up and Coach Nestlerode screamed his guts out directing his team to victory. Even though the Raiders did not win, it was a great game. No one last hopes. The team played until the last minute on the clock. The crowd was supportive until the end. We lost a frivolous battle but the team still worked hard. Get em' next time. Written By: Abraham Oliva |

How to obtain a DRIVER'S PERMIT
April 21, 2014 At the age of 16, kids are very excited for one reason: to obtain their permit to drive. It is very easy to get the permit at the DMV. You can get the practice quiz on the internet or you can read the DMV handbook and try to understand everything that it says. Once you feel confident, you can go to the nearest DMV and take the quiz. There are 50 questions you have to anser, so read very carefully and not rush. You can ONLY miss 8 questions. Once you pass the test, you are ready to drive! But of course, there has to be an adult with you 25 years or older with a valid California Driver's License. Written By: Elihu Virissimo |

Movie Review
April 18, 2014 There are many movies coming out every week, and Transcendence is one movie that stands out with a unique genre. This movie follows a scientist named Dr. Will Caster, who is in the field of artificial intelligence, called Singularity. After Dr. Caster gets shot and his mind is uploaded into a computer in order to have a version of him alive. Throughout the movie, one sees how Dr. Will Caster transform from a normal human being into a...well...A.I. So, in conclusion, this movie is worthy of your time- only if your a fan of the Sci-Fi Genre. I rate this movie 6 Bruce Willises out of 10 Bruce Willises. :3 Written By: Charlie Garcia |
Day of Silence
April 18, 2014 One Friday morning, I dutifully silenced myself, scribbling on Post-its and letting others speak for me. It was incredibly frustrating to have to communicate via written words, unable to blurt out my thoughts on a whim. The drive that kept me going was the purpose. Myself as well as many other Raiders silenced our voices to show our support for the LGBT community. So yes, I was more than willing to participate. As I walked through the halls, I would acknowledge those participating as well. We kind of built a trust, or a friendship once we made eye contact. I feel there is an understanding that needs to be made about this day. The silence and purple shirt isn't the point. That's not what makes the movement. The key to all this that gets people to think twice about their opinions is the feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you realize that the LGBT community lacks the natural given rights that you obtain. That's what this day is supposed to do. Support those in and even out of the closet. To make your fellow classmates feel comfortable and confident about themselves. Wearing the purple shirt is almost like giving a big hug to those who have suffered from their insecurity, or fear of being "different." Although, this day comes bittersweet. It is a beautiful thing to see our classmates show their love and support, but it shouldn't have gotten to this point. Lesbian, gay, bi, transgender, straight, black, white, it's all the SAME. We all have the same heart and choose to use it to love others. Who cares if that loved one is a boy or girl? It doesn't change the beauty of the matter. Life is meant to be spent loving and making the world a better place. April 18 is definitely a beautiful day. Written By: Kristen Hardin |
Pan-Asian Assembly
April 18, 2014
Two days ago was the Pan-Asian assembly. Filled with various dances from tinikling to sayaw modern/traditional, this year's assembly pleased many. First, a powerpoint was shown explaining the many different Asian countries. It was both educational and entertaining with mc's Patrick and Marianne. After, the dances came. Tinikling is a traditional dance in the Asian culture. It requires both agility and balance to maintain the dance. Following was Young lives and Sayaw Modern. Both dance crews moved to the beat of the music that made the crowd clap-a-long. Then afterschool, if you missed it, PAA sold boba and lumpia. Overall, it was a successful assembly. Let's see what they have in store for next year!

Have you ever wondered what prom is about? What it means? Why do we even bother? Well according to the Oxford dictionary, Prom is :
April 16, 2014 noun 1. a formal dance, esp. one held by a class in high school or college at the end of a year. short for promenade (sense 1 of the noun) The urban dictionary definition: 1. To the students: an excuse for young teenagers to get together for a night of dancing, flirting and spending hundreds of dollars in money to impress people they won't see ever again , how romantic! Business definition: 1. a corporate-controlled/ promoted high school "institution" that makes the dress shops, hairdressers, flowershops, limo companies, suit rental places, etc more wealthy. To the students who don't get to go: 1. A lifelong regret. It makes more people unhappy than any one other thing in high school... But really, Prom is all about having fun with your special ones for one last time before graduating high school and entering the scary and unpredictable "real world" (because living in earth for the past 17/18 years want real enough). So just go and have as much fun as possible , you won't regret it !! Written By: Aaron Paez (aapaezz) {instagram} |

Do Standardized test REALLY predict how well someone performs in college?
April 11, 2014
Yes, we are talking about the SATs. Most High School Junior and Seniors have or are planning to take this test as part of applying for college. Let it be known that UC and CSU schools require these scores. A new research challenges the fact that the SATs predict college success. William C. Hiss- an investigator on the subject and former director of admissions for BATES COLLEGE SAID THAT, "Grades are a much better predictor of how a student does in college than SAT scores, and that analysis is repeated again and again throughout the report. " With that, one can take an easy class and pass with no work done. Hiss continuing on with his statement also said that grades are given and determine college admission BUT it's the work you do that determines success in the classroom. The article written by Hiss did not fail to mention that, 'long-term discipline, and attention to detail, and doing your homework yields qualities vital to college performance." Summed up, his statement concerning college acceptances should not be solely based on SAT scores. Many people around the country do agree as 800-3,000 4 year Colleges and Universities in the nation give the option to not submit test scores. NOTE AGAIN! SAT scores are REQUIRED for CA schools. This article is NOT to convince you to not take that test but rather to keep in mind that you should discipline yourself to do ALL your work. JUNIORS, if you're planning to attend college, take the SAT. SENIORS, you did your best and now it's time to choose a school now.

What's your Ideal Way to be asked and ask to prom? Girls v. Boys~
How girls want TO BE ASKED (Survey):
- "I'll buy you food if you go to Prom with me." -"A simple ask" -"Something cute with balloons, poster, etc." -"By having others hold up a big sign then ask while having flowers." -"Because I'm in swim, it would be cute to be asked underwater when I'm racing." -"With posters and a big teddy bear." -"Something cute and personal nothing big. My ideal way to be asked to prom would be when the guy actually took the time to think and put effort would be perfect. For instance, I LOVE pizza and if he wanted to have a movie date and bring pizza in a heart shape and spelled out 'Prom with me?' with my favorite toppings would be perf! The more simple and thoughtful, the better." -For someone to take me to the beach and maybe write 'Prom?' in the sand with candles and roses." -"Just ask." -"Something small, cute...and maybe a rose...maybe ask on his knees..." -"Just ask, posters are corny." |
How boys want TO ASK (Survey):
-"It's April 3rd, and you haven't been asked already. Let's be serious, no one is asking you. So say: 'You, me, PROM'." -"I would fill the locker with kiss chocolates and be standing behind her with roses and 5 people holding up 'P R O M ?' while a song by Bruno Mars is playing." -"I would make up a small poem asking her to prom with a flower during lunch in the new building." -"I would glue a flashcard for every class she has until she could complete the sentence." -"I would surprise her at school with a teddy bear that has a shirt saying 'Will you go to Prom with me?" -"I would make her a mixtape of her favorite songs and at the end, record myself asking her." -"I would hold a boombox out her window playing 'Don't you forget about me' and then ask her to Prom at the end." -"I would take her out to eat her favorite food, and then take some flowers and ask her to prom." -"I would say 'Sup' Mommy. You, me, Prom?" -"I would say this: 'You got to buy a dress.' then she would say 'Why?' Then I would respond, 'Cuz' you're going to Prom with me." |

21st Adelante Mujer Conference
March 10, 2014
The Sweetwater Union High School District held its 21st Adelante Mujer Conference at Rancho Del Rey Middle School on March 1, 2014. For over 20 years, the Adelante Mujer Conference has been centralized to the idea that female students and their mothers should have an enriching learning experience. With over 100 participants, they were able to attend workshops led by female professionals. At these workshops female professionals talked about life skills, academic planning, and career opportunities. The purpose of these conferences is to encourage Latinas to continue their education after high school, pursue ‘non-traditional’ career paths, establish networks with Latina professionals and provide support and encouragement. Southwest High School Latinas did participate in this event. Since they attended the event, Latinas received gift packages for their attendance. For more information about the next Adelante Mujer conference, see Mrs. Ortega in the counseling office.

CIF Division I Final: Southwest High School vs. San Dieguito Academy
March 8, 2014 It’s truly unbelievable! Inconceivable! Beyond belief! Southwest High School’s Men’s Varsity soccer team is the top San Diego team! They won! Score: 2-1. It has been 11 years since Southwest High has captured the Division III title and has been 5 years since they have been runner-ups. Here are the details: Tonight’s kick-off began at 7pm against San Dieguito Academy. With the defense of an army, prolific goal-scorers, and goalies that never seem to let anything pass by, SOH has proceeded to be the best of its kind! These boys have truly moved like a ‘dark horse’. Led by second year coach, Giovani Medina, these boys did not let anyone down. Not earlier in the season- and not now. If you are not aware of how big of a deal this was, or seize to understand the enormity of this event, here’s a few instances that has happened that led to this conclusion: -Mr. Romero didn’t supply students with one or two BUT THREE buses to Mesa College. - It was FREE to go if you showed up in Raider Gear. -Mr. Grau burned previous coach and brother of current coach, Guillermo Medina on KSOH. (Who by way are still a highly recognized coach and athletic director.) -An article was published in Chula Vista’s STAR NEWS. If you weren’t able to make it, here are the highlights of tonight’s game: - Score made by #2 Alfredo Adame - Then both teams tied at 1-1 - Game went into overtime. - Then it became “Golden Goal/Sudden death” (Next goal won the game.) - SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL HAS WOOOOON! #9 Gabriel Alamillo scored! Due to this remarkable accomplishment, it was obvious that school pride was at its highest. Led by our frivolous leader Mr. Romero, students and staff were able to share this moment that will last throughout all of Southwest High’s history. Let’s remember that he has taken the time out of his busy schedule to attend these games and to capture great moments and share them with all- or at least with those on social media sight, Facebook. [Mr. Romero- your support has been greatly appreciated and I don’t think we could have asked for a better principal.] In an interview with STAR NEWS, he said, “If we win this banner, it will be the first CIF banner in 11 years for any sport at Southwest High School,” “Many members of this team have been playing together since they were in elementary school. Southwest High School has had a strong of tradition of success in soccer, known at Southwest as fútbol. Advancing to the finals and hopefully winning a CIF banner will be a huge accomplishment for our school. At Southwest High School, we love our fútbol.” It was tough competition throughout the season. San Dieguito Academy has eliminated three ‘higher-seeded teams’. However, SOH proved to be win-worthy for the finals. After the win against Escondido last Wednesday with goals made by Rafael Espinoza, David Paez, and Bernardo Leyva, SOH was now in the finals. Not to mention defense having a record high of 11 shutouts during the season, these valuable Raiders have been undefeated in their last nine games. We can agree that this year’s team is the best SOH has to offer. They have blown us all away with their passion, drive and successes. A good many compliments to the players: #0 Juan Barrera #10 Rafael Espinoza #1 Marco Beltran #11 Jaziel Galaviz #2 Alfredo Adame #13 Carlos Ortiz #3 Bernardo Leyva #14 Jose Mendoza #4 Jerry Mendoza #15 Miguel Vizcarra #5 David Chavarin #16 David Flores #6 Tony Garcia #17 Kevin Rodriguez #7 Brandon Mejia #18 Dario Baeza #8 Hector Silahua #19 Gerardo Lopez #9 Gabriel Alamillo #25 Rene Venegas [Since the very first win, I knew you, the team, were going far. A HUGE congratulations to each and every one of you. You proved to the non-believers that you can achieve greatness with team work and dedication. You’re a model to all future teams of Southwest High. And with that being said, cheers to you for a VERY successful season…that will continue on! And good luck at the State Championships!!! <3] Written By: Cecilia R. |

For the doubles team we had Diego Oropeza with Jeremy Narciso, Giovanni Ruiz with Frank Nguyen, and Russell Conrad with our new starter Carlos Garcia. Congratulations Men’s Varsity Tennis! February 21, 2014
Southwest’s very own engineering program will be featured on Channel 8 news! Why? Well, Southwest High is one of the few schools partnered with an engineering academy. The academy here at SOH is the CPA Eco-Engineering Academy. This program offers 9th-12th grade levels the opportunity to get involved with STEM curriculum. Through project based learning, students are offered courses specific to STEM curriculum. The sole base is to promote and prepare students for STEM fields. The Channel 8 story will be featured in March and will be available on here too! Keep posted.

Book Review of the Week: Cirque Du Freak
By Darren Shan
February 21, 2014
The story is completed by a full set of 12 books, and has the glorifying drama, hatred and the blood thirsty cast. Darren Shan communicates his story as he recalls he was once a vampire, but not just any vampire, he was a Vampire Prince. He was blooded by his master Larten Crepsley and agreed to become his assistant only if Master Crepsley saved the life of Shan’s best friend Steve Leonard (who was in a near death situation). The story goes along as Darren Shan travels the world with the Cirque Du Freak. When the time came, Shan had to be presented to the Council in Vampire Mountain where he would there find out that he, along with two other vampire, was to hunt for the Vampaneze Lord and murder him before he and the vampaneze extinguish the entire vampire clan. Shan leaves with Master Crepsley, the journey begins to Vampire Mountain, to the hiding place of Lady Evanna, his master’s home of birth when he was a mortal human, and finally the last battle takes place back in Darren Shan’s home town. I highly recommend this book you a looking for a thriller treat.

Mayoral Election
February 12, 2014
The moderate Republican City Councilman has won the San Diego mayoral election. Yes, Kevin Faulconer has won the special mayoral election. With all the precincts reported, Faulconer has won with a 54.5% of votes as David Alvarez received 45.5%. Though it is stated that counting the votes is not over, the gap between the percentages states that Kevin Faulconer has won. Faulconer is the only Republican leading a major city in all of California. Alvarez being a good sport, tweeted Faulconer "It's clear that he will be the next Mayor of San Diego. I look forward to working with him." So yes, Faulconer declared victory and is San Diego's new mayor.

Tonight, was Financial Aid Night at Southwest High School. Both resourceful and educational to parents and students alike, valuable information was shared to demonstrate the importance of getting your FREE MONEY. With FAFSA, one can use the money to pay for tuition every semester and reapply every year. Note: FAFSA packages are of all ranges depending on the income of your parents or legal guardians. -Loans (Two types of loans: Subsidized and Unsubsidized. Subsidized is when the government pays for the interest rate on the loan and unsubsidized means that the government does not pay for the interest rates. With having a loan, you MUST PAY-BACK the money. TIP: If having to take out a loan, “ONLY BORROW WHAT YOU NEED”.)
Comparing College Costs:
UC- $13,200/year
CSU- $7,077/year

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Meggie’s life seems completely wonderful. She has a wonderful father with the loveliest voice of them all and an amazing job as a “book doctor”, and a house full of books. Until one night, a mysterious man with three peculiar scars marking his face and most unusual name, comes to visit Mo, Meggie’s father, and changes their lives forever. Turns out there are reasons behind Mo’s never reading aloud to Meggie. But what she can’t understand is how her mother is involved with any of this, or why Mo is suddenly so mysterious.

December 15, 2013 They look like beauties but play like beasts- the Women’s Varsity Soccer team is swift and anything but nice on the field. This season has been one like no other. From winning Castle Park 11-1, these ladies do know how to triumph the competition. “Well we were undefeated, until today! On Tuesday we beat Castle Park 11-1 & today we lost vs. Our Lady of Peace 1-0.”, said Jennifer Tames. Do not let that discourage you though, because these ladies made it to the finals. The next day, December 14, 2013, the team made it to the championship! “We were losing by 2 the first half, and then recovered by scoring 2 goals in second half, which made us tie! This caused us to go over time which made it more difficult to play since they would take of 1 player every five minutes leaving us with 7 players vs. 7 players! On the last minute, the opponent scored right before we were about to go to penalties! We made it that far in the Barons Tournament & took second place (:”, said Jennifer Tames. The team put up a fight for sure! In the first half they were losing by two. This did not discourage them but rather propelled them to fight to the death. Receiving second place- they, their parents, fans, and the school should be proud of them. No one gave up thus this not being a defeat. Note to the team: Your team is solely made up of passion and pursuit which is why YOU have made it so far. Though the season has been full of trials and tribulations, you have not disenchanted us nor do we believe you will. Keep on keeping on, ladies. Written by: Cecilia R. Beware of the Iron Legs! Another win for SOH Varsity Soccer!
December 11, 2013 As the headliner says, “Beware of the iron legs”, the soccer junkies of Southwest High won another game of the season! They won the first of many finals to come. DAVID ALVAREZ here at SOH
December 3, 2013 To woo his potential voters, David Alvarez (Democrat) will be campaigning today during step. Upon him and his campaign regiment, he will do anything to persuade the majority vote. For those of you who don’t know, the previous mayoral election earlier in the year concluded that Kevin Faulconer (Republican) had the highest percentage of voter turnout. However, rules state that in order to be inaugurated to San Diego Mayor, the voter turnout percentage for each candidate must be 50% or higher. In this case, Faulconer did not reach 50%. This now leads to a mayoral runoff in February with the top two candidates. If you are 18 or older, or about to become an adult, your time has come to make a decision that will affect who will be running the city for the next four years. The choice is yours. Okay students, break is over now…
December 2, 2013
Can you believe that there are only three weeks of school left until we go on another break?! For many, these next three weeks will go by fast and for some it will be dreadful and slow. But not to worry, December is the month for holiday cheer! From decorating your Christmas tree to going to Del Mar for the spectacular light show, you can enjoy it all! Obviously more important, we the students must push through these coming weeks as it is the last grading period. SO, talk to your teachers about doing test corrections, turning in late work and doing any extra credit assignments offered. Just doing those things could make or break your grade. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT.
Important notice to Seniors: We have already passed the UC and CSU college application deadlines. Although that is one stress that has been lifted off of our shoulders, CAP and GOWN orders are due DECEMBER 6. Stop by the ASB for more information. After we come back from winter break, we only have a semester left. Let’s make it the best possible and defy the odds of us being the BEST class ever. It's a great year to be a Raider!

November the Great!!
November 14, 2013 Here it comes, the month of the cozy, the hairy and the food. November is known as the month with the most sweaters on earth because it is the perfect time to feel comfortable. Let’s make sweaters a great excuse to hide the fat you gain over thanksgiving break. In fact, November is not just the month to take out old sweaters that are found with the winter clothes but it’s also the month of the popular No Shave November! For those who have no knowledge of no shave November the name of it pretty much sums up the one rule for that whole month. And for all of you shopaholics let’s not forget that everything you might have desired since the beginning of the year will be on sale for as much as 75% off or more on Black Friday, and Cyber Monday!! When are these days you say? Well Black Friday can no longer be considered a Friday trend because most competing retailers are starting their sales Thanksgiving Day at 6 p.m. So let’s be grateful for what we have at 5 so we can ask for more things we don’t need at 6. Cyber Monday too is a trend that started since you can shop in the comfort of your home; however competing online retailers are starting their sales today. Because only in America, people buy stuff that is unnecessary right after the day we are thankful for what we already have. Written by: Karla M. Cecilia R. |

Halloween poems for the hollow
A Last Word
by Ernest Dowson Let us go hence: the night is now at hand; The day is overworn, the birds all flown; And we have reaped the crops the gods have sown; Despair and death; deep darkness o'er the land, Broods like an owl; we cannot understand Laughter or tears, for we have only known Surpassing vanity: vain things alone Have driven our perverse and aimless band. Let us go hence, somewhither strange and cold, To Hollow Lands where just men and unjust Find end of labour, where's rest for the old, Freedom to all from love and fear and lust. Twine our torn hands! O pray the earth enfold Our life-sick hearts and turn them into dust. |
Ulalume [an excerpt]
by Edgar Allan Poe The skies they were ashen and sober; The leaves they were crisped and sere-- The leaves they were withering and sere; It was night in the lonesome October Of my most immemorial year: It was hard by the dim lake of Auber, In the misty mid region of Weir-- It was down by the dank tarn of Auber, In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir ... |
Shock
by Michael R. Burch It was early in the morning, in the forming of my soul, in the dawning of desire, with passion at first bloom, with lightning splitting heaven to thunder's blasting roll and a sense of welling fire and, perhaps, impending doom-- that I cried out through the tumult of the raging storm on high for shelter from the chaos of the restless, driving rain ... and the voice I heard replying from a rift of bleeding sky was mine, I'm sure, and, furthermore, was certainly insane. |
Ghost
by Michael R. Burch White in the shadows I see your face, unbidden. Go, tell Love it is commonplace; tell Regret it is not so rare. Our love is not here though you smile, full of sedulous grace. Lost in darkness, I fear the past is our resting place. |
Vampires
by Michael R. Burch Vampires are such fragile creatures; we dread the dark, but the light destroys them ... sunlight, or a stake, or a cross—such common things. Still, late at night, when the bat-like vampire sings, we shrink from his voice. Centuries have taught us: in shadows danger lurks for those who stray, and there the vampire bares his yellow fangs and feels the ancient soul-tormenting pangs. He has no choice. We are his prey, plump and fragrant, and if we pray to avoid him, the more he prays to find us, prays to some despotic hooded God whose benediction is the humid blood he lusts to taste. |

Life as a teenager: alyssa rodriguez
(NEW EDIT)
When you begin growing physically and emotionally, you find
yourself being influenced easily by the people and things that you see, simply
because you are barely discovering yourself. You find yourself trying
desperately to fit in, modifying your body, your looks, and your personality,
all for acceptance. Yet, some of us still don’t receive
it.
Many suffer from something called, “low self-esteem.” Why you
may ask? Because of the expectations that are being set as we grow. Teenagers
are influenced by their parents, and sometimes their parents have a certain
perspective on life and people. As they get older, things get tougher. The words
become fists, and the fists turn into weapons. Being accepted today is like
asking for a million dollars; slightly impossible. Whether we like to notice it
or not, not being liked by everyone hurts, especially if you get picked on for
it. Teenagers are always trying to find a way out of this vicious circle;
finding cliques and groups of their same kind, and picking on others for being
different. It’s a way for them to relieve the pain they once had for being in
their place. Most aren’t aware of the damage that is being caused, though it is
quite a lot. Thanks to the harsh words of others, teens start questioning
themselves, their existence, who they are, and most importantly, why are they
doing that if they’re both human? Teens don’t understand why they get picked on,
and some don’t understand why they’re picking on someone. But, it all leads back
to being accepted. “I wasn’t accepted, so why must they be accepted.” They might
think.
As time passes, and the judgment carries on, the feeling of hurt
and anguish lives. Teenagers may lie at night, stare up the ceiling and think,
“Why me? Why can’t people see that I am simply a human trying to be myself?”
Many teenagers begin to feel grief for themselves, and some even lose hope. Hope
is something that we all need to survive, something we all need to stay living.
Many try to find ways of relieving this pain, and others just try appallingly to
fit in. Changing who they are, and basically losing themselves. They get so
carried away about changing their personality and their looks that they later
forget who they are. Thanks to trying to be accepted, eh? Not all however, are
trying to be accepted. Some are trying to stand out, yet, they still too want to
be acknowledged by their group of friends, and vice
versa.
Most teenagers feel a sense of loss and a sense of hopelessness
for themselves, pity right? If they’re being treated like this now, what’s the
point on keeping on? It will just be worse as they grow older, right? Living in
a world where if you don’t look a certain way, you’re a freak, if you like a
certain sex, you’re an abomination, if you speak your mind, you’re a rebel. We
just can’t please society. We lose ourselves trying to comply with life’s ways,
and we forget who we are, we forget our purpose, our voice. All we need is a bit
more compassion, and a bit more understanding. Who will give it to us? I am
Alyssa Rodriguez, and I am one of the teenagers who are yearning for acceptance.
I am one of those who have lost themselves. I am one of those who has lost hope;
hope in myself and this world. But, I know there will be a better tomorrow, and
I know there will be someone to guide us to that better
tomorrow:
“If you stand up for what you believe in, you’re
wrong.
Don’t give up now, come on, be
strong.
Don’t be terrified by the things you
hear;
Don’t be scared, believe in me,
dear.
Battered and worn are the words that we
adorn,
a mind full of misery, and a chest so
torn.
We choose to stand by our
beliefs
and they choose to stand by their ignorance, such
grief.
However, never forget to keep a smile on your
face
believe me, you’ll soon find you
place.
Just stay strong, you WILL find where you
belong”
- Alyssa Rodriguez
All we need is for someone to tell us it will be alright,
someone to tell us to keep on standing and to never lose faith. Being a teenager
is hard, whether it looks like it or not. We face plenty of ignorance daily, and
we have to deal with it on our own. We just need someone to be our base, someone
to restore faith in us. Because trying to change the ignorant minds out there is
impossible, so why not change our minds?

Have you heard? : TEACHERS WORK to the RULE
October 29, 2013 As most could tell, last Wednesday teachers walked off of campus to demonstrate the power they have. This was a “direct protest” against the district but mostly towards Superintendent Dr. Ed Brand. Due to the District bargaining teams' infidelity, all teachers in the SUHSD are facing an insurance cost hike. For most teachers, this insurance hike will put a damper on living expenses.Teachers who are single will go six-feet under and will be harder for them to resurface to what they previously lived. As for teachers with families, this increase too will create even more financial struggles on the long road ahead. These issues are still being negotiated. Written By: Southwest Newspaper Staff |
Mr. Jourdain, one of SOH'S SEA Representatives, told the Raiders' Digest staff the following:
“It’s called work to the rule. The staff has been deceived by agreements from the district. ...health insurance will be raised by $300 more per month.” Who does it affect? “It affects most staff with children and indirectly affects all of us. Also, students will be affected because teachers cannot work with the process of not helping the staff.” What actions are teachers and staff doing? “For the teachers' self respect, they will be working until the contract- direct protest. It was a unified collaboration." What is the worse case scenario? Families under pressure will take other jobs to meet their needs.” What is your personal view on the subject? “The district has been inconsistent with commitments to the community as a whole. I feel disappointed and have a sense of betrayal.” Will the school and district come to an agreement? “I hope so but it’s always a struggle when the district is not listening and denying answers to the public.” |
Interview with Dr. Ed Brand:
Previous questions were asked before concerning the "teachers' work to the rule", but this is one question that was asked: Interviewer: Is the rise in costs helping the teachers or helping you? Dr. Brand: ... (hung up) |
Movie Nights of the Month!
October 17, 2013 Raiders, are you interested in going to see a horror or a PG movie? The newspaper staff has made it our #1 priority to investigate what movies you must see. The top five MUST see movies are based on emotion, audience response, and depending on your age, how appropriate. Captain Philips (PG-13) takes our number one spot as it acts out the bravery of an American hero. Ever wondered how beautiful it must be to see the moon? Gravity (PG-13) has placed itself on our top five charts for the unthinkable danger of being up in space with little to hold on too. Who is ready to scare out the jelly out of someone? Cloudy with a chance of meat balls 2 (PG) is a continuation of the previous food-tastic movie about a world with giant portions of food. This is a great movie for anyone in the mood for a great discovery. The comedy movie in our chart brings out the laughter in all theaters everywhere. We are the Millers (R) is a movie about a make believe family hoping to get away with a crime, but before getting away with the crime a series of unfortunate events occur. If you are the type of person that loves to see a great horror movie get ready to experience the thrilling horror fest of Insidious 2 (PG-13), the continuation of America’s nightmare movie. Go to your local movie theater and experience the cinematic joy of these top 5 movies. Written by: Karla M. |
All School Testing!
October 15, 2013 On Wednesday, our school will be having an all school testing day. The testing will start at 7:39 to 11:30. Freshman will take the practice CAHSEE. By taking this practice test this will determine if freshman will be passing the CAHSEE next year. You have to take this test in 10th grade in order to graduate from high school. Juniors and Sophomores will be taking the PSAT. The PSAT is a practice SAT that gives you an idea of how the real SAT will be like. You have to take the SAT in your second semester of Junior year. The SAT is an exam that you have to take in order to get into college. After the testing ends then we will be having lunch at 11:35 to 12:05, after that students will have STEP from 12:10 to 12:35. During STEP 4, all underclassmen will be reporting to their period 4 teachers for the last 25 minutes. Written By: Melanie G. |
It’s Fall!
October 15, 2013 It is getting colder and colder and now it’s time to snuggle up and drink hot cocoa! Being October, it means that it is harvest time. So, it is the time for PUMPKIN EVERYTHING. Pumpkin carving, pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice latees at Starbucks! To enlighten the mood, did you know that there are pumpkin patches all around? Well, there is. Chula Vista mall, Plaza Bonita, even Southwestern College. From the tiniest to the largest pumpkins, you can find them all! Expect to pay pretty high prices for the specialty, home grown pumpkins. However, it is always nice to go for the ambiance- the sky, that breeze, and tranquility of being relaxed. So, go see for yourself! Written By: Cecilia R. |
Homecoming: Part 5 DANCE
October 14, 2013 If you were there, you would know- You’d know that Homecoming was fun and exciting spending time with friends. You can say that all who was there danced the night away with great music from an almost perfect DJ. Nothing was better than knowing words to the songs playing and finding the BEAT. Some may say it was lame, but if you found the right people to go with, then you would know that it turned out to be a pretty good night. That night, everyone looked spectacular- from the glitz, to the glamour, to that fresh clean cut you all know and love. The intensity rose came 10:27pm. It was almost time to announce the BMOC. Grand Marshall, MUNCH MASTER, tried to hold back the winner when she went on the microphone and coughed uncontrollably. By then the crowd was going nuts with anxiety. Then it happened… “The 2013 BMOC of the Class of 2014 is… RENE VENEGAS”. After that, you can only tell it was his closest friends crowding around him hollering, #TMT. It was such a thrill to see everyone as happy as they were. After about 3 minutes of the cheering, the laughter and the tears, the Homecoming queen and king had their individual dance. The spotlight was on, and floor was theirs. It was a sight to see as the majority of the voters had their favorites win. Nevertheless, the Homecoming princes and princesses had a fun time too. They were all good sports and cheered on the winners. And who could not forget the exit song of the night, "I love it". It really was a moment for that, "I DON'T CARE, I LOVE IT! " For seniors, it was a night to remember. Chances are, it is our last Homecoming ever. No regrets; just fun. Congratulations to RENE VENEGAS and ATENAS NUNEZ for being the 2013 Homecoming King and Queen! Written By: Cecilia R. Photos Courtesy Of: Jose Luis A. Kailee C. Rosalily M. Aaron P. Rene V. Aileen G. Homecoming: Part 4 Game Day
October 13, 2013
Last week at Friday's Homecoming Game against Castle Park High, Southwest Raiders played their hardest throughout the whole game. Even though we only scored 33 to 62 and didn't come in with the win, we were still able to enjoy great firework show as our Homecoming Queen was revealed. Atenas Nunez was announced by our great grand marshall Mrs. Munch as the 2013 Homecoming Queen. As she was crowned, the crowd went wild. As the other princesses posed for pictures with their heads held high, Atenas was whisked away in a convertible around the track and field for all to see. As the night progressed, we were weary of the win, but still enjoyed the occasion and ambiance of spending a night with our closest friends. Enjoying touchdowns made and turnovers alike, fans munched on snacks from our many clubs and cheered for the team. This was yet another Homecoming Game night where everyone enjoyed their time and made another memory to keep away in their hearts for years to come.

Enjoying touchdowns made and turnovers alike, fans munched on snacks from our many clubs and cheered for the team. This was yet another Homecoming Game night where everyone enjoyed their time and made another memory to keep away in their hearts for years to come.

Homecoming: Part 2 Spirit Days (Get your PEP on!)
October 10, 2013
Spirit Week is the base of the celebration. The importance of who is involved and who chains themselves down to their basic outfits marks the beginning of our spirit arising from its sleep. Check out the grand marshal, as she clashes together the ultimate super hero outfit for Tuesday’s Mix Match day. Freshman, don’t be afraid of participating because how well you participate and communicate throughout your high school years might define if you may be in the 2017 Homecoming Court. Seniors! Enjoy your last year and come out strong by participating in all school events the most. It may not seem as important but those who are in the Homecoming Court have participated in school related events since their freshman year. Today, Disney Day is the perfect time to dress the inner princess (or the inner mouse depending on your preference) in every girl. Completing the fantasy of becoming your favorite Disney character is uncommon and often everlasting when no one actually makes an excuse for it to happen. Don’t back out when it comes to the final Spirit Week Day. Let the Class Wars begin, Freshman wear black, Sophomores wrap yourself around all red, Juniors brighten up our day with a bit of sunshine yellow, and SENIORS wear white.

Homecoming: Part 1 Formal Assembly
October 9, 2013 Welcome to the Octoberific Homecoming Week. Yesterday, Tuesday the 8th we were welcomed back to our school with a Formal Assembly, which introduced our male and female candidates for the Homecoming Court. In case you are unaware of, our outstanding candidates: Atenas Nunez, Jennifer Tames, Kimberly Avalos, Laura Hoyo, and Rosalily Mayorquin. Seniors expected to see Rene Venegas, Aaron Paez, Jose Luis Ayala, Alfredo Vazquez, and Marco Beltran walk down the aisle for the selected male candidates. Raiders were ready to show their support by participating in the Spirit Week, or at least what is left of the four days we will be in school before the huge dance on Saturday the 12th, 2013. Grease Day will start off as the first day of the Spirit Week, following with Mix Match Wednesday, Disney Thursday, and the final show down comes to an end with the Class Wars. On Friday the 11th our football team will be playing against Castle Park High. So be our guest and come support our seniors as they play their last Homecoming Game. Written By: Karla M. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. ROMERO!
On October 6, it was our beloved principal’s birthday! Another year older meant another year wiser. Mr. Romero celebrated his “?” birthday with a faculty meeting. On this day, Southwest High staff had a birthday party for him. He was the man of the day and the principal of the year. His good deeds have not gone unnoticed as the staff put on a celebration for another year of life. Filled with food, laughter and good company, Mr. Romero received a pretty original and wacky gift. I think all Southwest students can agree that Mr. Romero is the most fun-loving principal we ever had. We would not change it one bit. So, Mr. Romero, cheers to another year. We hope you have many more years. Let them be fun, full of laughter and happiness. Happy Birthday. Written By: Cecilia R. |
Homecoming Court 2013-2014
September 21, 2013
Congratulations to all Homecoming Court members! All of the candidates triumphed and are now one step closer to the top. As Coach Selland would say, being on the Homecoming Court is an honor; and he is right. Being on the court is what singles out the ‘best’ of Southwest High. With dignity, honor and poise these candidates represent the Senior Class of 2014. Remember, these candidates have a long road to trek through. There is no doubt that they will be anything but ordinary. The spirit days are coming up, so we all are waiting to see how spirited they really are. “Have school spirit, they can; Win, they MUST.” On October 11, 2013 the Homecoming Game will take place. On that night, Homecoming Queen will be announced. Who will it be? All female candidates are absolutely spectacular and our school will be lucky to have anyone of them as our Queen. The day after, October 12, 2013-Homecoming Dance. At 10pm sharp, the BMOC will be announced. The same goes for all the male candidates. They too all have that light and spark that makes them the best. This year’s court is competitive, but all will prevail. It is truly an honor to have a court such as this. If you believe in the crowd, the crowd will believe in you.
To all candidates: Good luck, live long and prosper in all that you do. Thank you for representing the Senior Class at this year’s Homecoming Dance.

"I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun during Homecoming , because that's what Homecoming is all about- having fun and enjoying every minute. Well , I want to see my school win at the game! I think our team is not going to let us down on that...I hope. I really want to make it unique, personally I will go crazy. I have a party mode that is really wild. I Love a Clean San Diego: Tijuana Estuary
September 21, 2013 Today was the city wide clean-up day. People from all around the city teamed up to beautify our home. As much as it hurts to see people wreck the city, hope was restored as many gathered to make it great again. Our very own school was part of this event. Southwest’s T.U.P.E and Key Club were part of the Tijuana Estuary clean up. This was no easy going job. It was laborious, but was done for something much more than meets the eye. Pulling out ice plants on all fours, hoeing out deadly plants, and planting new ones were all on the agenda. The job was done, and the day well spent for these Raiders for they were doing the city a favor. For those who were part of this event: Do not forget to go back where you were at in the Spring. See how well your job went and how much it made a difference. You'll see it, guaranteed. Written By: Cecilia R. |
Safe School Ambassadors
September 14, 2013 Today, Southwest and Olympian High School came together to break barriers between our schools, but also to realize that we are not as different as we thought. We created strong bonds between one another as Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez led us through many icebreakers and emotional times. Every participating student was able to open up in their groups and let out what isn’t normally expressed. Tears were shared, but more importantly, laughs were as well and that is what creates stronger bonds. The highlights of the day were the trust walks and the “If you really knew me” activity. During the trust walks, pairs challenged the trust towards their partners when they were led out and about around the school. There were students that tripped and fell, but there was always someone there to pick them up once again to assure they weren’t alone. Throughout the day we all were able to open up and reveal our emotions in a way that we knew we wouldn’t be judged by anyone. I personally, was grateful that I had a group that was able to open up whatever they felt comfortable with. Within our circle we were able to strike a bond of friendship and unity in the sense that we were there for one another if one needed it. As for us as a whole, it was obvious that when we see each other once again, the connection will definitely remain with everyone. The Safe School Ambassadors is a program that can absolutely change one’s life and outlook on every aspect and not just the negative experiences each of us have. Everyone that attended can now go out and form bonds with many that are sometimes excluded or mistreated for any reason in order to eliminate the feeling that anyone is left out in any occasion. I am happy to say that I was a part of this experience and am glad we were all into the training as I was. Personally, I am thinking as I write this article of how I can do my best to become more aware of school wide problems and create a safer environment for every single student that is faced daily or rarely with any conflict. VEX Robotics Competition
September 14, 2013 On Saturday, September 14, Southwest High School was privileged enough to host the ranking competition for the VEX robotics teams throughout the Sweetwater District. There, we worked on our robots, and confronted the other schools in ranking matches. Southwest High School consists of five teams. They are led by Francisco Gonzalez, Jose Osvaldo Cardozo, Cruz Galarza, Carlos "Charlie" Garcia, and Jose Ramirez. Although none of the Southwest teams ended up in the top five spots, every single team learned so much and gained enough experience to become the top school. Thank you to Mr. Arias and Dr. Arias. This program is available at Southwest High School. Written By: Carlos "Charlie" G. Photo Courtesy of: Lianni C. |

16 de Septiembre Assembly
September 13, 2013
Today, M.E.Ch.A had its first assembly of the year. This assembly was done in celebration of "Grito de Dolores". The Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) was an armed conflict between people of Mexico and Spanish colonial authorities. This movement and the people involved, sought independence from Spain. Independence was finally achieved and is otherwise known as Mexico Independence Day. Based on this day in history, M.E.Ch.A had the school's mariachi play, ballet folklorico perform, and had a fashion show. Along with all the performances, Mr. Rodriguez presented a powerpoint that ultimately led up to a message. That message was: To make your own future and have the "Ganas" to do it.
I cannot wait until M.E.Ch.A's next event!

We will never forget this tragic day that happened 12 years ago. Terrorism caused this nation to create a sense of protection against such another attack. Let this day be known as a tragedy and a day to remember those who have fallen. Let's remember those who lost their lives that day and remember what it means to be free and alive.

Red Cross Blood Drive
September 11, 2013
In accordance with the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 Twin Tower attack, Southwest High is having the first American Red Cross Blood Drive of the year. On this day, 12 years ago, lives were lost and the men and women of this country were devastated. It was also the day where all men and women around came together to try and save as many lives as possible.
Now today, September 11, 2013 – Red Cross needs blood to save just as many lives each day. Donating 1 pint of blood saves 3 lives. The self-satisfaction of donating blood is one of the greatest feelings of all. And at the end of the day, you think to yourselves, “I just gave blood, so 3 more people have another day to survive.” Those feelings right there, are the evoking emotions that arise from donating blood and ultimately saving lives. So Raiders, go to the gymnasium and save lives today.

WELCOME BACK ASSEMBLY!
August 27, 2013
Were you there? Were you part of the action? If not, you missed out! Southwest High had its first all school assembly of the year. The whole school was in the gym screaming their hearts out claiming Raiders were the best. Using the "Scream-O-Meter", Southwest High staff measured the sound of each class. Of course, the Senior Class of 2014 won! Nevertheless, these Raiders all share a soul purpose and that is to show pride. Day by day we Raiders are creating memories, one step at a time. Now remember Raiders, we have just three of these all school spirit assemblies left, so make it count because it will be over before you know it. WE are ready to make this year the best year YET!
